Red Leaf is the name of a drug which the Manalist Priests use for power and for visions of the future. It is highly regulated, and anyone caught using or in possession of the drug, will be executed.
The drug itself is said to be a gift from Father Manala, however, much like Manala Crystals, this is a lie. The vast majority of people in the world believe that it is a gift, but, in reality, it was created by a company called Genetech.
Red Leaf came into being when the northern forests of the world were being destroyed by a bug called the Crimson Birch Beetle. The insidious pest was destroying so many birches that they ran the risk of becoming extinct. Because of this, Genetech created a birch tree that would be poisonous to the beetles. This effectively killed off the Crimson Birch Beetles. However, it was soon learned that although the leaves are poisonous to the beetles, they have a drug like effect on humans.
Genetech realized that this tree was more useful than expected, and so, they sought to control the red leaf. They have a lucrative contract with the Manalists, who use the drug in their world religion. However, the drug is forbidden to anyone else. The Manalists pay Genetech a large amount of money for these exclusive rights to the product.
Most everyday people have never used red leaf, nor will they due to the strict drug laws enforced by Genetech, the Manalists, and the Anti Drug Commission.
Most everyday people assume that Red Leaf is indeed a gift from Father Manala.
