Appearance: Judith is short and thin, due to malnutrition. Her work is primarily indoors, so she is very pale. dresses simply and neatly. When she isn't wearing her work uniform, she can usually be seen in a khaki skirt and blouse. Judith is particularly fond of sweaters, which she knits herself. She often wears hats because married Jewish women are supposed to cover their hair. However, she has been doing so less recently, because she is afraid of arousing suspicion. Judith is bald because she moved to a new, smaller apartment that happened to be infested with lice. She doesn't have lice anymore, and the apartment is clean, but she's bald as a ping pong ball.
Personality: Judith is not a very happy person. She strikes many as abrasive and cold. Ironically, she is very passionate, prone to idealism and poetry. Under that icy exterior, she's just a puppy rescuing, baby kissing bleeding heart. She tends to share this side of herself with only a few people. This is partly for her own personal safety, and partly because she is embarrassed.
story: Yehudit Kalischer was born in Northern Israel. She spent her early years at a religious socialist kibbutz called Ein HaTzedek (lit. Spring of Justice, fictional). At Ein HaTzedek, they raised chickens, grew avocados, and ran a screw factory. The Kalischers left the kibbutz after becoming disgusted with the militant and nationalist position that many of the other kibbutz members developed in response to the rise of Manalism. The kibbutz was later destroyed by Manalists, and the kibbutzniks were massacred.
Yehudit and her parents moved all over Europe and Asia, doing odd jobs in religious Jewish enclaves. Her mother had studied as an accountant, and her father was good at doing heavy lifting, so they were never out of work. As the Manalists took power, these enclaves were scattered and eliminated. Yehudit and her parents anglicized their first names, in an attempt to stave off persecution. Yehudit became Judith during a stint in England. The family remained ardently socialist and Jewish, but less and less publicly. When Judith was in her late teens, her mother developed a case of appendicitis. Because they didn't have money for medical care, Judith’s mother died. Judith’s father died a few years later, from an infected cut.
Judith met her husband, Leon Zinn, while studying computers at a French technical school. He was a landscaper at a mansion that Judith passed on her way home from school. Their relationship started as a flirtation of stolen flowers and frivolous love poems. Eventually, after they began to trust each other more, Leon and Judith discovered that they had similar backgrounds. They were both secret Jews and socialists whose families had fled Israel. They whispered to each other in Hebrew. Leon’s real name was “Lior.”
After two years of scrimping and saving, Leon and Judith had a black market Jewish wedding, officiated by a rabbi who had recently been released from Manalist prison. Among their wedding gifts, Leon and Judith received a baby goat from Leon’s eccentric great aunt who was apparently dealing in black market farm animals for purposes that should not be mentioned in polite conversation. They named it "The Great Goatsby" or "Goatsby" for short as an anti-Capitalist joke and reference to the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.
Soon after their marriage, Leon and Judith had a son. Publicly, they named him Arnold, but privately, they named him Ariel. Despite the risks, Leon and Judith decided to circumcise their son. This act was forbidden by the Manalists because of its status as a Jewish and Muslim religious ritual. When Leon attempted to contact a trained mohel through the black market, he was caught in a sting and arrested. Ariel was seized by the Manalists and is being raised by them. Judith does not know the location or state of her husband or son. It has been a year since then. She hasn’t been implicated yet, but she is under suspicion. She still carries on her socialist and Jewish activities, although she is more careful now than ever. Judith is doing everything she can to discover if her husband is still alive, and she has been trying through legal and illegal means to get her son back. So far, she has been without success.
Judith has been working for Allmart since she graduated technical school. She is required to move often by the company, and even pays house calls to particularly wealthy clients. She hates having to deal with customers, but realizes that things could always be worse. She had to move to a smaller, less expensive apartment recently, because she no longer has her husband's income to help with the rent. This is how she got lice. Her current goals include saving enough money to get her husband and son out of Manalist prison, getting enough to eat, and not getting arrested.
((Constructive criticism and corrections would be much appreciated. I'm a little rusty.))
