Do you prefer real pictures or anime ones?
Personally I like real ones...the only hard part is finding something real but fitting of a character....such as Keitoleinen for instance. It is hard to find something just right unless I turn to anime.

I like any and all pictures. They're art.

It depends in the character for me, for Charon anime or something drawn was basically the only choice I had, I couldn't find any actual pictures and even if I had found one I doubt it could portray my character like my current avatar does

I agree with Charon more or less. I like to get my inspiration for characters from the pictures I choose for them. Every so often I draw my own characters if I've got an idea I really like. But no matter what I like my characters to be believable. So basically I go either way, though I tend to use anime pictures more.

Either works. They provide a vision and feel for your character to others, as well as yourself. I think having a human picture can be limiting because they are most often individuals people recognise from other things (not always) but you can find any number of drawn images that are unique and without established backstory.

I think that's the best way of putting it.

Either way it's image searching for something that's an appropriate approximation. I prefer to go with anime characters on the sole basis of I have a larger knowledge of anime characters than actual people who might look like a character I want to play.
