The Rift occurred during the death of the Gods in 79 M as a result of the use of the Fate Neutralizer. As a result, time could no longer continue forward without the Gods being alive. As such, the confusion in time led to various points being switched, smashed together, or even disappeared. While their births may now occur any time after that (79 M,) they cannot have memory of their previous lives. (They are ignorant to the fact they are Gods.)
However, the dissipation of the Gray Zone in Canada paired with the use of Dreamers has re-disrupted the time scale. As such, characters from before the war could possibly fall victim and be sucked to the present time within a few years.
With above information in regard:
-The continuing effects of the Fate Neutralizer prevent Gods from entering the current time. As such, Gods cannot cross time-space into or out of this dimension, thus why they do not know who they are.
-Characters who choose to incorporate this into their own plot-line should know they were essentially teleported to their time and place. As such, no one should know who they are anymore and technically be regarded as "dead," at least as they were upon arrival.
